Sulcata or Red foot Tortoise?
Q: I cannot decide between the two breeds. There are no small sized tortoises in hawaii except petco, which would die in a year or so. My choices are either leopard, sulcata, or red foot. I find the leopard too expensive so i took that out of my list.
A: Sulcatas grow MUCH larger, and dig like bulldozers, so you may want to go with the redfoot. (All tortoises can dig, so be aware of that---you may need to bury chicken wire around the perimeter of your yard to prevent them from tunneling out).
I recommend getting either 2 females, or just one tortoise.

Q: My best friend is OBSESSED with turtles and tortoises, but she's never got to touch one of the giant tortoises. Are there any reptile petting zoos in the St. Louis area?

Tortoise loses leg, but gains a wheel
A 12-year-old African tortoise that had his front left leg amputated is on a roll, thanks to a swiveling wheel attached to his shell recently at Washington State University's veterinary hospital.
Gamera, a 23-pound African spur-thighed tortoise, has gained weight and is thriving with his new appendage.
"I don't know whether he'd pass the hare, but he moves around very well," a hospital spokesman said last week.
Gamera was brought to the hospital by his owner with a life-threatening leg injury.

Tortoise Has Leg Replaced With Swivel Wheel | Geekosystem
by James Plafke
Not quite as adorable or as endearing as the dog with four prosthetic legs , but still pretty adorable and endearing, the above tortoise , named Gamera , sustained severe thermal injury and tissue damage from an unknown source. The 12-year-old African spur-thighed tortoise had the damaged leg amputated up to the shoulder at Washing State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and replaced with a swivel wheel — basically, one of those wheels commonly found on the bottom of office chairs. Don’t worry, the wheel wasn’t drilled into the turtle, but was attached to its shell with an epoxy adhesive. As a precaution, Gamera was given a feeding tube in order to keep his nutrition up, and he has gained three pounds since before the procedure took place. The little guy seems to be doing fine. Check out a video of him rolling around and eating some grass below.
